Helping Kids Cope
One of the hardest, most painful injuries to overcome is a serious
burn injury. The pain can be intense; the recovery long, and for
children and teens, the prospect of going back to school can be
scary. What kinds of questions will other students and teachers
ask? Will they be stared at or made fun of? Will they be able
to do all the things they used to?
The X-MenŽ in: Life Lessons is a unique comic book designed to
help children, ages 9-17, with burn injuries learn social reintegration
skills. Created through the partnership of Starlight and Marvel
Enterprises, Life Lessons features the popular X-MenŽ characters
and introduces a new teenage X-ManŽ named T-Ray, who survives
a serious burn injury. The principal messages of the book are
interwoven with T-Ray's return to school, as he struggles to find
ways to cope with the challenges of his injury. Key themes include:
- The importance of self-acceptance in order to gain acceptance
by others
- Not defining yourself by your injury
- Managing interactions with others by managing your actions
and responses
- Responding to questions, teasing and staring with confidence
- Finding coping strategies that work for you
The X-MenŽ in: Life Lessons includes a Discussion Guide with
tips and strategies for adults using the comic book with children.
The book is available in English or Spanish to burn centers, hospitals,
burn foundations, support agencies and camps.
