In order to continue our efforts to expand the number and
reach of our programs in Alberta, we need your help! Whether
it is by volunteering at a Great Escapes event, walking at
the Dream Walk or getting your company involved in sponsorship,
there are many ways to make a difference to children in your
community.
VOLUNTEERS
Volunteers are the lifeblood of our organization, without
whom, many things would not be possible. Starlight offers
volunteers a variety of ways to shine in the life of a seriously
ill child. Our volunteer program not only brightens a child's
life, but it also brightens the life of our volunteers. This
rewarding experience allows volunteers to apply their diverse
talents in several ways, meet new people and experience fresh
challenges. As a volunteer, your time and creative ideas are
invaluable and your efforts as part of our volunteer team
will bring enjoyable rewards to you and to the Starlight Starbright
families.
The Alberta Office is currently accepting volunteer applications
for the following positions:
- Fund Development (DreamWalk Committee, Corporate Development
team)
- Great Escapes
- Office Volunteer
- Mascot
Qualified candidates should posses a commitment to our mission,
have a tendency towards leadership, communication, problem-solving,
team-work and flexibility, and relevant skills or a desire
to learn new skills.

COMMUNITY SUPPORT
We are able to deliver the Starlight Starbright programs
through the generous support of individuals, community groups
and local corporate sponsors. As a member of the Canadian
Center for Philanthropy and, as such, we do not receive government
funding. To raise the necessary funds to support our programs,
we depend on the generosity of the general public and our
corporate community. There are a variety of ways you can get
involved:
We hope you will join us in bringing smiles to the faces
of seriously ill children. To find out how you can help Starlight
Starbright to shine in Alberta, please contact Renee Gillespie.
In many hospitals throughout Alberta, pediatric patients
and their families have access to Starlight Starbright Fun
Centers - mobile entertainment units equipped with a flat
screen monitor, DVD player and a Nintendo Wii System. Fun
Centers roll right up to the side of young patients' beds
or anywhere in a hospital setting, making them perfect for
hospitalized children in numerous situations: anticipating
surgery, during long outpatient clinic treatments, waiting
in the emergency room or fighting loneliness after visiting
hours have ended.
Another Starlight Starbright hospital program is the PC
Pal program. PC Pals are laptop computers that provide
pediatric patients with a variety of entertaining and educational
software, Starlight Starbright's media programs, and filtered
Internet access. Learn how you can help bring PC Pals to your
community by clicking here.
Outside the hospital, families are able to access Starlight
Starbright Children's Foundation's online
educational programs that help children and their families
learn more about their conditions, understand various medical
procedures, and encourage them to communicate with healthcare
providers. Some are geared toward reducing fear and increasing
understanding before medical treatment, while others are designed
to help children cope with their illnesses over the long term,
but each of the programs strives to empower children in the
face of their illnesses.
Many teens in are also part of Starbright
World, that our private and secure Web-based social network
developed for teens living with a chronic or serious illness
(and their siblings) to help them connect with other kids
in similar situations.
