New Starlight Fun Centres rolling out across Canada!

A special thanks to Scott Hickey, VP with Gamma-Dynacare Medical Laboratories Canada, who was on hand for the ribbon-cutting ceremony of a brand new Starlight Canada Fun Centre at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre.

This is just one of many Starlight Canada Fun Centres being rolled out to various hospitals across Canada this year.  We thank all of our donors, such as Gamma-Dynacare, Astellas, and Aviva, among others, for helping us equip more and more hospitals with these much-needed Fun Centres.

 Thank You Volunteers

Thank you to all of our volunteers this National Volunteer Week!

It’s National Volunteer Week this April 21-27, 2013 and everyone here at Starlight is truly grateful for all the volunteer support we receive. Whether you normally volunteer at a Starlight event or donate your time in another way, your contribution makes a real difference and gives seriously ill children across Canada a chance to laugh, play and simply be kids again.

Read this message from our President, Christopher Barry, thanking you for all of your effort.

Jacob’s Wish Adventure at the West Edmonton Mall

Four-year-old Jacob lives with Eosinophilic Esophagitis which severely impacts his life. This condition creates an inflammation of the esophagus, which causes him chronic pain and difficulty swallowing, leaving him unable to eat any food. Recently his 2-year-old sister was also diagnosed with the same rare condition.

At the top of Jacob’s wish list was to visit West Edmonton Mall and experience all of the magic of staying at the mall’s Fantasyland Hotel. Starlight arranged for a truck themed room, and the whole family enjoyed a 3-day VIP pass for the mall, giving them access to days of fun.

 Running room

Thank you B.C. Night Race™ Runners

A few weeks ago at Dunman Running Room’s Wednesday Run Club, Starlight was thrilled to be presented with a donation of $12,733 raised through their annual Night Race™.

The Energizer Night Race™ saw over 1,700 Vancouver runners brace wind, rain and the chillly fall weather to raise funds for Starlight. With high energy, the night runners lit up the sky around English Bay with their provided headlamps as they followed a 5 or 10 KM course.

Thank you to the Running Room and everyone who participated, fundraised or donated! Stay tuned for information on the 2013 Night Race™.

Fun Day Brighteners

A variety of fun events were enjoyed by Starlight children across the country in recent weeks. Here are a few photo highlights:

Lucca enjoyed the Raptors pre-game warm-up as well as the game! Here he is along with his sister having a great time just being kids (pictured)!

Matthew was very happy to travel the few hours to Toronto with his family to enjoy their first Leafs game together. They watched the game in style with VIP box seats, all thanks to Leafs defenseman Carl Gunnarsson.

Fourteen Starlight families enjoyed Strawberry Shortcake, featuring the Doodlebops, live in concert at three locations (Hamilton, Guelph and Cornwall). “The girls barely touched their seats as they were so engaged with the show. Thank you to all who offered us this super fun opportunity.” – Starlight mom.

Two Starlight families including the Gosnell’s, one of the newest additions to our Starlight family, enjoyed the Vancouver Whitecaps FC soccer game.

Starlight Families Escape with The Croods

Starlight children and their families filled Cineplex theatres in Vancouver and Toronto for a sneak preview movie screening of The Croods! They had the opportunity to see the new animated movie before anyone else, munch on popcorn, have their smiling faces painted and enjoy a fun day together.

Even more Starlight kids will have the chance to watch The Croods at their local movie theatre in the coming weeks – cities up next include Ottawa, London, Victoria, Surrey, Red Deer, Edmonton and Calgary!

A special thank you goes to 20th Century Fox and DreamWorks for making this special advance screening treat possible.

A Night To Remember For 10 Starlight Children

Alberta:  Former Calgary Hitmen player Ryan Getzlaf (along with Kids Up Front) arranged for his suite at the Saddledome to be enjoyed by 10 Starlight children—but eating hot dogs and watching hockey wasn’t all that the kids got to do. By the end of the evening, these young fans had received personalized letters and photos of Getzlaf, were given some cool Hitmen t-shirts, had their bright excited faces posted on the jumbotron, and got to meet several of the players fresh off the ice! It was a night to remember for Starlight Children in Calgary.

The Adventures of Starlight Bear Abbalicious

Over the holidays, the Halford family traveled all the way to sunny Mexico with their Starlight Abbalicious bear. This adorable teddy bear was created in loving memory of their little angel Abby who sadly passed away last year from mitochondrial disease. Abby remains with the Halfords in spirit, and of course always in their hearts.

“Our Abbalicious Bear was met by thousands of tourists and Mexican hotel staff. She was popular amongst all that met her and her story touched many. We as a family feel so blessed with the amount of people Abby continues to touch. Her story is one of heartache as well as inspiration. Abbalicious will continue to help millions of sick children throughout Canada and the rest of the world. Thank you for sharing in part of our daughter’s legacy.” –The Halford Family

The Abbalicious Bear is available for sale at Toys “R” Us – proceeds go to Starlight and support the seriously ill children we help.

In-Hospital Fun Center Wii Tournament

Saskatchewan, Royal University Hospital: These three boys, normally quiet in their own rooms, become loud rascals whose laughter fills the halls of the Pediatrics wing when they unite for a Wii tournament on the Starlight Fun Center. We are so glad our in-hospital programs bring such joy to these brave young patients

The new Starlight Teen Lounge

Located within Children’s Hospital in London, the new Starlight teen lounge is a comfortable space for adolescent patients to hang out in, socialize with others or just relax. The room is equipped with a big screen TV for watching movies, computers with internet access and board games. Children’s Hospital is the largest single site for acute hospital-based child health care in Southwestern Ontario, serving a population of 1.5 million people, with over 400,000 of them being children.
